Success At Elgin Sale For New On-Line Bidding System
A new live on-line auction system was successfully used for the first time at an antiques sale at the Elgin Auction Centre yesterday. (Wed 25th April)
Aberdeen & Northern Marts used the system – the-saleroom.com – to allow would-be buyers from around the world to take part in the sale.
Bidders from Boulder, Colorado in America, Italy, Austria, Romania and Czechoslovakia were among the 183 people registered on-line for the auction.
They were able to see photographs of the lots, hear the auctioneer live and bid against people in the actual salesroom in New Elgin Road.
Of the 1217 lots on offer, a total of 163 were sold to on-line bidders. However, all the successful on-line buyers were UK based, with a large number in the south of England.
Among the items that created an on-line stir were a collection of bicycles from the late Doug Smith, 83, of Turriff, Aberdeenshire, who died in August.
The star item in his collection was a 1920’s ice cream tricycle from the Central Soda Fountain cafe in Buckie which attracted keen on-line bidding before being sold to a local collector from Lossiemouth for £1,100.
The same buyer also paid £600 for a 1950s Raleigh message bike that was originally used by a shop in Turriff, while four restored penny farthings were sold for £200; £340, £560 and £740.
The highest price in the auction was £1,800 for a watercolour painting of Lossiemouth lighthouse by renowned Moray artist David West.
Elgin Auction Centre manager Gordon Pirie: “It was a very encouraging start to our on-line bidding service with one internet bidder pushing all the way for the ice cream tricycle until it went to someone in the sale room.
“Our antique sales already attract a large number of buyers from all over Scotland along with telephone bidders. This on-line option now opens up a new market for us.”
Aberdeen & Northern Marts already operate a similar on-line bidding service – i-bdder.com – for some of its major cattle shows and sales at the Thainstone Centre, Inverurie. Both on-line systems have been developed by a London-based company.
