MORE >One of the most northerly dairy units in the UK, Noss Farm on Shetland, has been put on the market as a going concern.
The 676-acre farm is one of six dairy units on the island which collectively own and supply Shetland Farm Dairies in Lerwick. At a time when dairy farmers in the UK are facing crippling cuts in the price they receive, the Shetland farmers get 37p a litre from SFD.
Farmer John Mainland is selling a business on a lock, stock and barrel basis, including his shareholding in Shetland Farm Dairies, and is seeking offers over £1,300,000. The sale is being handled by Aberdeen & Northern (Estates).
The sale includes the milking herd of 80 Holstein Friesian cows with all replacements bred on the farm, including 19 heifers, 27 bulling heifers and 24 young stock. There a range of dairy buildings including a Fulwood 8x16 Herringbone milking parlour. It has a milk quota of 591,300 litres.
Also included are 550 mainly Texel x Shetland ewes. In addition to the 676 acres, there are also 117-acres of common grazing. The land is regarded as some of the best on Shetland and prior to the dairy being developed in 1993, was used to grow potatoes, turnips, carrots and barley.
The single farm payment is also included in the sale along with a comprehensive range of modern machinery. A recently built Norwegian-style 4-bedroom bungalow in separate ownership may be available by separate negotiation.
The farm is based at the southern end of Shetland, six-miles from Sumburgh airport, next to the RSPB Nature Reserve at Loch of Spiggie.
John Rhind of Aberdeen & Northern (Estates) said: “This is a very profitable farm and offers a unique opportunity to take on a going concern in a wonderful location.”
