Final Call For Entries For Thainstone Spectacular

A final call for entries for this year’s Thainstone Spectacular has been made before the closing deadline of Friday 17th August.

The Aberdeen & Northern Marts event, which is sponsored by the Clydesdale Bank, will be held on Wednesday 5th September and is regarded as Scotland’s leading show and sale of weaned calves and store cattle suitable for further exhibition purposes.

It will feature many of the top prize winners from the summer show circuit and draws buyers from all over the UK to the Thainstone Centre at Inverurie with the cattle purchased there going on to collect top awards at the Christmas prime stock shows or summer shows the following year.

This year’s judges will be Kenny Veitch, Drumlone, Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, for heifers while Paul Barwood, Grange Farm, Fleggburgh, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, will place the steers. Both will join together to select the overall champion.

The timings for this year’s event have been changed with the judging taking place at the slightly earlier time of 1pm and the presentation of trophies at 6pm followed by the sale.

This year’s sale will also be conducted using the new i-bidder.com on-line auction system, which allows buyers to view and hear the actual sale in real-time and to bid against ringside buyers for entries.

Photographs of the entries can also be seen before the event on the ANM Group website, anmgroup.co.uk/marts.

A special buyers incentive offering £500 for any Spectacular entry that goes on to win the overall cattle championship or £200 for the baby beef championship at a variety of future shows, has been extended to include the East of England Smithfield Festival, the Welsh Winter Fair, the Aberdeen Christmas Classic, the Scottish National Winter Fair, the Borderway Agri Expro and Countryside Live.

To qualify, the winning entry has to have been bought at the Spectacular, exhibited by the buyer and then sold at the event where it won the championship.
A keen demand is expected with the buoyant trade in prime cattle continuing and auctioneer John Angus said he was anticipating a packed ringside of buyers from around the country.

He added: “The Spectacular has a tremendous reputation across the UK as the place to source cattle with excellent future show potential and this year will be no different. There will be top quality entries from all over the North and the North-east as well as the rest of Scotland.”
